Asian American MasculinUT: A Fishbowl Discussion

How does Asian-American masculinity influence your everyday interactions? Join the Asian Pacific Islander American Collective (APAC) and MasculinUT for a fishbowl discussion exploring the origin and purpose of masculinity, its effect on interpersonal relationships, and the ways in which we learn and practice masculinity. People of all races, gender identities and expressions are welcome to participate.

Moonlight: A Showing and Conversation with Trevante Rhodes

February 16th, 2017

Critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated film, Moonlight is being screened at Hogg Memorial Auditorium at 6:00 and 9:00 pm. Star of the film and UT alumnus, Trevante Rhodes, will be doing a fireside chat between screenings, starting at 8:00 pm. Anyone interested in the talk must arrive at the 6:00 pm screening.

Film Screening and Discussion with Filmmaker of #BLACKMENDREAM

December 4, 2015

A screening of #BLACKMENDREAM, a deeply insightful and provocative documentary that challenges the misconceptions and stereotypes associated with black masculinity. The screening was followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, Shikeith, and the discussion was led by Dr. Kevin Thomas, Assistant Professor of Advertising and Public Relations and a member of the MasculinUT Faculty Steering Committee. Approximately 30 students attended.

Showdown Against Sexual Assault

A Benefit Banquet Supporting Voices Against Violence hosted by the Texas Blazers New Guy Class of 2015 Support Campaign. The Texas Blazers are an all-male honor society and service-spirit-leadership organization on the University of Texas at Austin campus.

Towards a Feminist Sociology of Incest in Mexico
Author-meets-critic conversation with Dr. Gloria González-López

November 16, 2015

A panel discussion led by moderator Erin Burrows, Prevention and Outreach Specialist for Voices Against Violence with Dr. Angela Valenzuela, Professor in the Department of Educational Administration, Erika Grajeda, Doctoral Student in the Department of of Sociology and Juan Portillo, Doctoral Student in the Department of Sociology. The panel discussion was followed by a Q&A and book signing. Approximately 80 students attended.

Screening and Discussion of The Mask You Live In for Suicide Prevention Week

September 23, 2015

A screening and discussion of the film, The Mask You Live In. From the creators of “Miss Representation,” this film examines contemporary masculinity. What messages do boys and men receive in popular culture, sports, and the media? What happens to kids when the traits that have been feminized are devalued over and over again? The screening was followed by a guided discussion with Emiliano Diaz de Leon from the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault and Dr. Aaron Rochlen, professor and program director of Counseling Psychology. 40 students attended.

September 3, 2015

Voices Against Violence launched MasculinUT: Health Masculinities Project with author Dr. Michael Messner, Professor of Sociology and Gender at the University of Southern California, who responded to comments about his new book: “Some Men: Feminist Allies and the Movement to End Violence Against Women. The event included a panel discussion with Dr. Christine Williams, Dr. Ben Carrington and Student Government Chief of Staff, Taral Patal followed by a Q&A and book signing. 200 students attended.

MasculinUT Student Leadership Lunch

September 3, 2015

Students with a strong leadership history on campus were invited to join Voices Against Violence, Interfraternity Council, Sorority and Fraternity Life and the Dean of Students Office to learn about MasculinUT: Healthy Masculinities Project with Dr. Michael Messner, Professor of Sociology and Gender at the University of Southern California. Students were asked to comment on how masculinity impacted their experiences at UT Austin, what healthy masculinities mean to them and what kinds of events they would be interested in seeing on campus. 17 students attended.
