Meet your counselor

Armando Sanchez (pronouns: he/him) is a Clinical Social Worker in the Counselors in Academic Residence (CARE) Program, where he provides mental health services to students in the Cockrell School of Engineering (CSE). He works with individuals, facilitates group therapy, and meets with CSE students needing crisis support. In addition to his clinical work, Armando provides workshops and outreach to CSE students as well as consultation and training to CSE staff and faculty to promote student well-being.

Armando’s clinical interests include helping students navigate life transitions and relationship changes, social and racial justice and the impact they have on mental health, issues faced by members of the LGBTQ+ community, coping with anxiety and depression, and cultivating resilience. He emphasizes cultural competence and humility, in addition to identity work, with a full understanding that students’ identities and their social context are central to understanding the stressors they face and their sources of strength.

CARE Clinical Services

  • Students are primarily referred by CSE staff or faculty member. Students interested in learning more about resources to support their mental health can contact Armando directly by phone: 512-471-3741.
  • Armando will assess student needs and offer appropriate services (e.g. short-term counseling, resources and referrals, crisis intervention, and groups)

Trainings and Workshops

  • Offered to students and staff
  • Topics vary (e.g. mindfulness, coping with stress, test anxiety, assisting student in distress)

Consultation

  • Available to consult one-on-one and in meetings/groups. Please contact Armando for more information.
