About the Clearinghouse

The Clearinghouse is a collection of resource programs in printed form made available to professionals in the mental health field in order to assist them in conducting their own programs or workshops. The manuals generally fall into two categories: Structured/ Thematic Groups and Innovative Programs. Structured /Thematic Groups include life skills programs (topics like learning to be assertive), resolving critical life themes (depression, jealousy), and helping people successfully complete transitions (loss, divorce). Innovative Programs include consultation interventions, developmental interventions, professional resource materials, and professional and peer training programs.

Clearinghouse authors represent practitioners in hospitals, colleges, universities, public agencies, and private practice, as well as graduate-level students specializing in group counseling. Approximately 80 of these programs are distributed through the central office of The Clearinghouse located at the Counseling & Mental Health Center at The University of Texas at Austin. The remainder are available from the authors or their designated representatives. Typical program fees are in the $3.00 to $9.00 range. Most are priced at the cost of reproduction and shipping.

We review the programs for completeness and for goals and objectives, but we do not require effectiveness or outcome data. The sole purpose of the Clearinghouse is to serve as an idea and information exchange to help mental health professionals develop programming by taking advantage of the ideas of others.

The Clearinghouse was established by David J. Drum, Ph.D. and others in the 1980s at the University of Rhode Island and it has been headquartered at the University of Texas Counseling and Mental Health Center since 1990. Currently it is is directed by Chris Brownson, Director, Counseling and Mental Health Center, The University of Texas at Austin. Martha Hartzog serves as editor and coordinator. The catalogue presents information about each of the resource programs, including a brief description, cost, and ordering information. If the program has not yet been converted to a .pdf format, you must order by mail, according to the directions on each program description.

How to Order

Certain programs are available by e-mail in .pdf format. For these, you simply e-mail the Clearinghouse Coordinator, as indicated on the description page for each program, stipulating title and code number. The other programs are availble through regular mail. We do not accept purchase orders or a charge card. Note that many of the programs are not ordered from the University of Texas location. You will find specific ordering information in the detailed program descriptions.
